CALL OUT 14/2026
Monday 04 May 2026 (1820 hrs)
Two experienced climbers were at Beacon Scar in Arncliffe Woods above Ingelby Arncliffe, when one was involved in a climbing accident. The team were alerted of the incident by North Yorkshire Police and immediately deployed the team to Cod Beck Car Park.
The first 4 members at the car park deployed to the casualty site on foot. En route to the site, they met up with Helimed personnel from the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and assisted with transferring their kit to the casualty. The route in up to the site from a track was very steep ,soft ground with a dense area of trees and shrubs.
Reviewing the location it was clear that the extraction of the casualty would be very difficult, whether winched upwards or stretchered downwards.
HM Coastguard were requested to provide assistance with a winch rescue. The helicopter from Carlisle was dispatched.
Meanwhile, one Land Rover and other personnel were transferred to the top of the crag, while the other Rover progressed via a lower track towards the casualty site. Yorkshire Ambulance Service also arrived at a location below the casualty site.
Helimed personnel treated and stabilised the casualty awaiting a decision on the extraction route. If the winch was not possible, the team prepared with personnel and equipment to stretcher the casualty downhill with a back up rope system.
Once on scene, HM Coastguard performed an assessment of the feasibility of winching and decided it was possible.
The helicopter manoeuvred into a suitable position to allow the winch to happen. The stretcher was lowered from the helicopter, casualty loaded and finally winched up. The Coastguard transferred the casualty to a nearby field where the air ambulance was waiting to transfer him to hospital.Once the air ambulance had departed the team headed off the hill to the car park.
We wish the casualty all the best and a speedy recovery.
