CLEVELAND SURVIVAL – Information for entrants 2025

The Cleveland Survival is a challenge event. The challenge for you is to complete the course and navigate over paths and tracks on the North York Moors in a limited time.


2025 Competitor Start Times


Registration will be held in the start venue.

Registration is possible on the Friday night between 20.00 hours and 22.00 hours and from 06.30 on Saturday morning.

You will need to bring your own maps and compass. 1:25000 OS maps

For the event you will need Explorer OL 26 NY Moors Western area

We strongly advise you to equip yourselves properly for winter conditions on the moors including aids for survival. The following items should be considered as essential:-

  • Maps and compass
  • Emergency food, Survival bag, Whistle
  • Windproofs and waterproofs

As experienced runners and walkers you should carry any other items you regard as important for your safety and comfort (walkers should carry a torch).

In the event of an emergency remember the international distress code on your whistle or torch – six long blasts/flashes followed by a minutes silence. This should be repeated continuously.

Remember winter conditions on the North York Moors are potentially dangerous

ARRIVAL/START

  • Please arrive half an hour before your start time.
  • Go to the registration area where we require your name and number, class (runner or walker) and you will be asked to complete a description form. You will be issued with a clip card.
  • Be dressed and ready in the assembly area 10 minutes before your start time. From here you will be moved to the start.
  • You will be given further instructions at the start.
  • Your route card will be issued after the start.
  • The start time given must be adhered to.

CHECKPOINTS

  • You will visit ALL checkpoints in the order given on your route card.
  • You must punch the clip card at ALL check points or via points in the appropriate square.
  • At certain check points you must give your registration number – failure to do so will result in disqualification.

CUT OFF TIMES

In order to ensure everyone’s safety cut off times will be imposed and listed on your route card. If you do not reach the specified checkpoint within the timescale you will be transported to the finish.

FINISHING

  • Hopefully some hours later you will arrive at the finish.
  • Go immediately to the finish and hand in your clipcard.
  • Return to the Registration Hall for your hot meal

THE RULES

  • NO DOGS ARE ALLOWED ON THE EVENT
  • Competitors MUST report in at the finish whether they complete the course or not.
  • Late arrivals will forfeit a time equal to their lateness.
  • Clip cards MUST be handed in at the finish: inadequate or unreadable punching will disqualify the competitor from the prizes.
  • Competitors must punch their own clip card.
  • Competitors must travel between checkpoints using public rights of way and permissive footpaths. Failure to do so may lead to disqualification.
  • Any competitor who removes any item or commits any damage on the course will be disqualified.
  • Runners must not use pacers on the event. This will lead to disqualification.
  • GPS satellite navigation systems are not allowed.
  • Competitors must obey the country code. Close ALL gates.
  • In the event of a dispute the Organisers decision is final.
  • Organisers, landowners and sponsors shall not be responsible for any injury or loss incurred by any persons as a result of the event.
  • The Organisers reserve the right to reduce or cancel the event at short notice in the event of dangerous conditions or a large scale search/rescue operation.
  • Please be polite to the marshals and accept all instructions. Anti-social behaviour WILL result in disqualification.

GENERAL INFORMATION

CAR PARKING

Parking is available at the venue, please follow the signs and/or instructions from marshals.

Where possible please car share.

REFRESHMENTS

  • We are encouraging you to bring your own reusable cup to reduce landfill.
  • A hot meal will be provided at the finish together with hot and cold drinks.
  • Hot and cold drinks will be provided at one checkpoint.
  • For your sustenance en route you should carry your own food and drink.

TOILETS

Toilets are available at the hall for registration

FIRST AID

There will be trained first aiders at major checkpoints. In addition there will be Team advanced first aiders with the rescue squads.

Join the team

Applications can be made to join the team in a support role (Operational Support) or as a hill going (Search and Rescue) member.

Applications for either role can be made at any time. Intakes for Operational Support members occur at various times of the year. There is one annual intake for Search and Rescue normally each September.
