Two of our members attended a Mountain Rescue England & Wales 'Avalanche Awareness Course' at Glenmore Lodge in the Cairngorms last weekend. The risk of avalanche on The North York Moors is very slim, though one of our past members did happen upon the remains of one around ten years ago, whilst cross-country skiing near Ingleby Incline. Rescue teams often…
Way back in June 2021 the Team held an assessment day as we were looking to recruit some new search and rescue members; we aim to have up to fifty S&R members at any one time (in addition to around twenty Support members). The assessment day covered a wide range of attributes such as physical fitness, navigation, working as a…
After a gap of two-years (apart from a virtual event) the Whalebones Walk is back for 2022! The route of this long-standing event starts at the Whalebones in Whitby and follows the Cleveland Way north to Saltburn-by-the-Sea and then onto Marske-by-the-Sea, a distance of 22-miles. It will take place on Sunday 1st May 2022. Details are yet to be finalised…
Some fantastic news about one of our Team members today. Claire Starkey has been announced as the winner of the Zetland FM-sponsored 'Julie Donaldson Volunteer Award' in the 2022 Inspiring Women - Redcar and Cleveland awards. Well done Claire! Not a bad week for Claire and her partner Paul - one of their dogs was awarded '2nd limit dog' in…
Today has been ideal for getting out and about and enjoying some glorious sunshine on the first day of (meteorological) Spring. With a new month comes a new photo from our 2022 Team Calendar - this fine sunset view of Commondale. The 'March sponsor' for our calendar is yet again Weather Goat Walk Support "The Goaties", long-term supporters of the…
Cleveland Police & Crime Commissioner Steve Turner has awarded Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team £3,500 from Police Property Act Funding, to provide response driver training for 14 of our volunteer members, further enhancing their driving skills when attending incidents in the area. The two-day Emergency Response Driver Training course enables those Team members who are most frequently deployed as drivers to…
We're a bit late with this month's calendar photo which is this snowy one taken last year, just below the Cleveland Hills. February's sponsor from our 2022 Team Calendar was once again Sadlers shepherding - who have sponsored all three years that we've been publishing one. So a huge debt of thanks to Ross Sadler, who provides shearing and general…
In 2018 Mercedes-Benz of Teesside provided Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team with an on-loan Mercedes GLC 4x4. That car was a huge help to Team members, immediately transforming their capabilities - by transporting search dogs, supporting search & rescue operations and as a key resource to support fundraising activities. During the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic the GLC was at…
Following on from the traditional Great Ayton Santa Sleigh run, held just before Christmas, we received this very kind letter from All Saints Church in Great Ayton regarding the collection, which was donated to the church. Thank you again to everyone who turned out on the night - £672 was a tremendous total.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRI4N_xabVY&t=35s Our video review of 2021 is now live. As with all other mountain rescue teams and the emergency services in general, it’s been another difficult year due to the implications of COVID-19. Despite those difficulties we have continued to provide a 24-hour search & rescue service everyday of the year, due in no small part to the hard work…
