Roseberry Topping Callout

17-10-2019

Incident was a rescue on Roseberry. Casualty was located via phone find after initial briefing from ambulance control. Both rovers were tasked as per the SOP to Aireyholme and the NT car park. Team gave cas care before handover to the road crew at top of Roseberry Lane. We noted that as the weather deteriorated as we approach winter we should generally hold the ambulance at the car park Key learning points: double check all stretcher straps before moving the casualty V Alpha to always share a grid ref at earliest opportunity For further development Ensure that the cas-carer is identified to all, and if they have to be involved in the carry out ( due to limited man power or other issues), consideration is given to where they are on the stretcher ie able to talk to the casualty

Incident 28 - MTB Crash

23-06-2019

Incident 28 occurred at 1 o'clock on Sunday afternoon on June23rd. A 49 year old mountain biker from Middlesbrough had lost control of her bike and fallen heavily whilst on a ride with her husband on a moorland track in the Birk Brow area near Guisborough. The team deployed its two Landrover ambulances into the area and managed to locate the casualty on a track about two kilometres from the nearest road. The injured lady was treated at the scene and stabilised by paramedics from the North East Ambulance Service and one of our team doctors along with team personnel. Due to the remote location and the seriousness of the lady's injuries we asked for the assistance of the Great North Air Ambulance Service to evacuate her to hospital. Their helicopter was only able to land around 200 metres from the incident site so members of the team were employed to carry the injured lady to the aircraft on a specialised mountain rescue stretcher. 19 team members were involved in the incident that lasted around two hours.

22-06-2019

Incident 27 occurred just after 1400hrs on Saturday June 22nd. A 21 year old lady from the Durham area had fallen around 6 metres onto rocks, sustaining serious injuries, whilst climbing at the Wainstones on the Moors above Stokesley. The team deployed in their landrover ambulances to the scene and managed to drive across fields to within around 200 metres from the crag along with a paramedic from the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. The lady was treated at the scene by team personnel, including a doctor, and the ambulance paramedic. They were then assisted by the medical staff from the Yorkshire Air Ambulance that had arrived on scene soon after us. Once stabilised the lady was carried on a mountain rescue stretcher by the team 100 metres to the waiting helicopter for the short flight to James Cook University Hospital. Eighteen team members were involved in the incident that lasted two hours.

Incident 4 - Lower Leg Injury

28-01-2019

The team was called by Yorkshire Ambulance Service at 16.12hrs to assist with the rescue of an injured woman. The 45 year old woman from Chop Gate had been acting as a ‘beater’ at a shooting event on the Scugdale Estate near Swainby. She tripped on a wire fence and sustained a lower leg injury. Team members along with the Ambulance crew splinted her lower leg and administered pain relief. In the near freezing temperatures as she lay on the ground we ensured she was kept warm under an Emergency shelter and in one our Casualty bags, specifically designed for this type of incident. Team members, supported by members of the shoot then carried her several hundred metres through the very boggy fields to the waiting Ambulance ready for transportation to hospital. Thanks to those who also ensured the inquisitive cows were kept at bay! 15 Team members attended the scene and several others were in transit. The incident lasted just over an hour.

Incident 68 - Roseberry Topping

03-10-2018

The Roseberry Topping area continues to be a Callout hotspot for us with so many people rightly enjoying the paths and views around our great local landmark. The North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) contacted us today at 13.12 to assisted them with a 16 year old walker who had injured his ankle. A group of young students with their tutor were walking east of Roseberry Topping near the col when one of them stumbled and injured his ankle. A team Land Rover transported a NEAS paramedic to the scene where the group were doing a fine job of supporting him and helped him hobble in the direction of the main path down to the local farm. The injured person was transported back down the hill and transferred over to the waiting Ambulance. Once again many thanks to Aireyholme farm for hosting our RV point and the location of the Ambulance handover. 8 volunteers team members and our two Land Rovers attended the scene and the incident lasted around 40 mins.

Incident 67 - Esk Valley Walk Crag Rescue

01-10-2018

The incident began when two men from Lincoln were spending a couple few days walking the Esk Valley Walk from Castleton to Whitby. Around five o clock on Monday evening one of the men lost his footing on the path near Glaisedale and began falling over the cliff edge that dropped around 10 metres into the River Esk. As he fell he was grabbed by his friend so the two of them slid down the cliff to be stopped by trees and bushes on the water’s edge. The incident happened around 200metres from the nearest road along a track through the woods near Glaisedale Station. One of the two managed to raise the alarm with his mobile phone and alerted the ambulance service who in turn alerted the rescue team. A member of Cleveland MRT who lives in Danby was first on the scene and quickly assessed the condition of the two walkers and it was decided that one of the men could walk out with assistance along the narrow path alongside the river whilst the second had potentially more serious injuries and needed evacuation on a stretcher. After a tricky operation on the slippy, narrow path alongside the river the man was immobilized on one of our specialized stretchers and maneuvered to where he could be carried back up the cliffside by means of a backup rope. He was taken, by the ambulance service, to James Cook Hospital for treatment. The incident lasted nearly four hours and involved 24 mountain rescue volunteers.

Incident 65 - Eston Nab Leg Injury

26-09-2018

When a training night becomes a real incident. Wednesday night is one of the Teams regular training nights and tonight the charity Redcar & Cleveland Mind were at our team base to deliver a course giving us a further insight into mental health issues. The session was abruptly interrupted when we were contacted by NEAS (North East Ambulance Service) to respond to reports of a child who had fallen from rocks on the Eston Hills near the recognisable England flag. Team members couldn't have been in a better place to respond and we despatched our two Land Rover Ambulances and the on loan Sytner Mercedes-Benz Teesside Mercedes, whilst some team members manned our control room. It also gave our new prospective members, who have also started training, a chance to see the team deploying live. The 12 year old boy was quickly located, treated for his lower leg injury and given pain relief. We then carried him in our stretcher back to our Land Rovers located at the telecommunications masts. He was then driven back down to the roadside and handed over to the waiting RVV (Rapid Response Vehicle and County Ambulance paramedics for further assessment and transfer to hospital. The incident which started in daylight soon turned into a headtorch illuminated extraction as darkness fell with the Tees Valley lights blinking far below.

Incident 37 - Lower leg injury Roseberry Topping

04-06-2018

North Yorkshire Police contacted us with reports of a woman who had fallen at Roseberry Topping with a believed broken leg. The 63 yr old woman from Hutton Rudby was out walking with friends and had stumbled injuring her ankle. By good fortune she was initially looked after by another group out walking which included nurses from York. 14 Team members responded along with two Team Landrover Ambulances. We drove to a position near the site and located the group on a steep path on the SE side of Roseberry Topping beyond the disused Roseberry Mines. Team members gave her pain relief and treated her lower leg injury, before carrying her on our stretcher down the slope to our Landrover. We than transported her back to Aireyholme Farm where she was handed over to YAS Yorkshire Ambulance Service, then transported to James Cook Hospital. Many thanks once again to Aireyholme Farm for 'hosting' our RV point. The incident lasted around 1hr 45min.

Incident 33 - Family Lost in Guisborough Woods

27-05-2018

The team were called out by Cleveland Police at 16.27 to locate a family that had become disorientated on the edge of Hutton Lowcross Woods, near Guisbrough. Initial reports were that they had asked directions from a farm so two vehicles were dispatched with four team members to see if the family could be located in that area. Whilst the vehicles were on route the team call out officer made contact with the family and established that they were all well (two adults, a twelve week old baby, a four and six year old) but that they had become lost in a wooded area. With no sign of them at the farm the vehicles were dispatched along possible routes. Using descriptions of their surroundings the call out officer narrowed down a search area and using the sirens on a team vehicle the family were able to let us know they could hear us and eventually were located on a wooded slope. The search party were also able to use their 'tracking skills' by following the tracks left by the pram wheels!! None-the-worse for their adventure we were able to walk them down to our vehicles and as we did not have access to child car seats the decision was made to call them a taxi to take them home. We're sure it's a day they'll remember. 5 team members and two team Landrovers were involved for 1hr 15min.

The Team Doctor assisted Ambulance Paramedics to treat the mans injuries, before being carried in our stretcher through the woods into the adjacent field, where YAA (Yorkshire Air Ambulance) had deployed. The man was further assessed by the Air Ambulance personnel before being flown to James Cook hospital. One of our Team member who lives close to the incident, made very effective use of his quad bike! 14 team members responded and the incident lasted approx 1.5 hrs.

Incident 24 - Cyclist Guisborough

29-04-2018

Our Team Leader was called directly after a mountain biker found another rider on a cycle route known as "The Nomad Trail" in Guisborough Woods. The rider, a 45 year old Guisborough man, had crashed some time earlier in the morning but couldn't reach his phone to call for assistance. The Team used the SARLOC system to obtain the precise location of the incident and deployed team members in Land Rover Ambulances from the Team's Base and also from the Cleveland Klondike Bike Race. Members of the public helped keep the casualty warm before the team arrived. He was then treated at the scene by team members before being carefully carried to a nearby forest track by stretcher and then subsequently evacuated from the scene in a Land Rover for about a kilometre to Silverton Road where in turn he was transferred to an ambulance. Sixteen Team Members attended this incident, which took around two hours. Our thanks to the other cyclists who helped and we wish the cyclist a speedy recovery.

Incident 25 - walker lost near Bloworth Crossing

16-05-2017

Callout 25 came at 11:15 on Tuesday 16th May. North Yorkshire Police alerted us to a walker who was lost near Bloworth Crossing on the moor top above Ingleby Greenhow. We attempted to contact him via his mobile phone to obtain more information but it was out of signal. One of the Team Landrovers was dispatched into the area where the lost person thought he was (about 3 miles from the nearest road but comparatively straightforward to reach by Landrover). The rest of the Team were put on standby. As the Team reached the area of Bloworth the lost man managed to send a text to us saying that they had found out where they were and were walking, with another party to a road. We correctly assumed that they were heading across the moor towards the Lion Inn at Blakey and headed in that direction in the Landrover. We met up with the party a couple of miles from the lion Inn on the disused railway track and gave them a lift to the pub. They were a party of school friends in their 40s who were doing the Lyke Wake Walk. They had become disorientated in the fog and phoned for help. Once the fog lifted they managed to find the correct route but were cold and wet so were grateful for a lift to safety. The incident lasted around two and a half hours with three of the Team active and the rest on standby.
