Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team

Sunday was day-2 of the practice weekend and, as thought, it wasn’t as dry as Saturday. In fact, it turned out to be quite wintery at times with another bitingly cold wind in the Blakey Ridge area. Ideal training conditions in some ways but it makes us all the more grateful for the many donations received over the years that allow us to be equipped with a full range of layered, all weather clothing. Thanks to everyone who contributes to our charity work!
So with icy roads and some overnight snow we started off with a sweep search of the moor to find six small items (beer can, sweets etc) scattered amongst the moorland vegetation. When searching for missing people we keep an eye out for things like these; they provide potential clues to where someone might be. Each item was tagged with a number which, when all had been found, gave the grid reference of the 'casualty'. That turned out to be one of our Team doctors with a 'lower leg fracture’. He was positioned on awkward steep bouldery ground. The rescue took place in driving rain and owing to the slippery conditions and terrain the rescue stretcher was secured with a back-up rope for security.
Thanks yet again to Mercedes-Benz of Teesside for the on-going loan of a Mercedes GLC. It provided valuable support alongside the one Team Land Rover that was deployed at the practice (the other Land Rover was being used elsewhere for driver training).
So, if being out on the hills in all sorts of weather, stumbling through waist high heather, experiencing the joys of your boots getting filled with the contents of that unseen bog (whilst carrying rescue equipment and a casualty) appeals to you, then why not apply to join us! Applications are now open for search & rescue members - find out more via the link below:

You guys are unreal, hope I never need your help x
Saw you guys around midday, was hoping it was a training day rather than a call. You do a marvellous job, and yeas it was a very cold wintry day.
Respect!
