Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team

Some excellent news about a very significant donation to Cleveland MRT, inspired by staff at the Stokesley branch of NFU Mutual. The company’s press release is reproduced below with permission:
NFU Mutual’s agent and branch offices across the North East have nominated 47 local charities in the region to receive a combined donation of more than £286,000 from a national £1.92m ‘Agency Giving Fund’ launched by the Head Office of rural insurer NFU Mutual.
To ensure these donations reached all corners of the UK and were directed where they were needed most in 2024, NFU Mutual’s agency offices and branches, with more than 280 locations nationwide, were given the opportunity to nominate local charities to receive a share of the fund.
From providing food parcels, donating to frontline health charities and enabling outreach mental health services to continue, the fund is making a difference to communities across the region.
One of the charities to benefit in the North East was Cleveland Mountain Rescue, which was nominated by NFU Mutual Stokesley Agency, receiving a donation of £6,509.
Gary Clarke, the Call-out Officer at Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team, said: “We rescue people who are injured, ill or missing, mainly from remote locations on the North York Moors. Sometimes on difficult terrain and often in bad weather. Carrying someone any distance on a rescue stretcher in such conditions is hard work and can be unnerving for the casualty. When we attach a ‘rescue wheel’ to a stretcher it makes the going a lot easier for everyone involved, but until recently we only had one such wheel. They are not cheap, being a specialised bit of kit designed to attach securely to ruggedised rescue stretchers. The NFU Mutual donation allowed us to buy a second wheel so that both of our rescue Land Rover ambulances are now identically equipped.
“Obviously getting to locations in a safe and efficient manner in our vehicles is vital. We have been able to fund a number of ‘response and blue light’ driving courses for our members thanks to the donation, with more courses forthcoming.
“The donation also allowed us to purchase a ’shock box’ for use when training with our Schiller medical monitors which incorporate a defibrillator facility. The ’shock box’ mimics the signals from a casualty’s heart and has proved to be of huge value in enhancing the skills of our Remote Rescue Medical Technicians.
“We plan to use the remaining funds to purchase waterproof clothing for some new members who are due to start with us in the New Year, and to support the procurement of some updated Technical Rope Rescue equipment pending an on-going review of our current set-up.”
Dave Smith, NFU Mutual regional manager for the North East region, said: “Charities like Cleveland Mountain Rescue are making a wonderful difference to our communities in these challenging times, and we are proud that our agents have nominated a wide range of local causes across the region to benefit from NFU Mutual’s national fund.”
Many thanks to NFU Mutual and especially to the local staff at the Stokesley branch who nominated us! Greg Proll from NFU Mutual is pictured at our Base with Team members Tim, Sarah and Andy, having been shown some of the new equipment and clothing. ... See MoreSee Less
