Rescue – Cleveland Way nr Wain Stones

SUNDAY 5TH FEBRUARY 2023

INCIDENT TYPE: FULL TEAM CALL-OUT

We were asked by the Yorkshire Ambulance Service to go to the aid of a man who had sustained a serious leg injury whilst walking along the Cleveland Way just west of Wain Stones, about 2-miles south of Great Broughton. Two double-crewed team Land Rovers were sent from our Base whilst other members made their own way to the area.

One of our team doctors was first to arrive and made contact with one of the casualty’s two walking companions (the other had stayed with him) so he duly set off to assess the  injuries. As other team members started to arrive they and two YAS personnel were ferried in by our Land Rovers along forest tracks to a point from where they had to walk uphill to reach the casualty site carrying medical and rescue equipment. After being given strong pain relief his leg was splinted and he was then lifted onto a mountain rescue stretcher and packaged within a casualty bag to keep warm.

He was then carried downhill and loaded into one of the Land Rovers before being transported to a waiting ambulance for onward treatment at hospital. We wish him well for his recovery. Seventeen team members plus our call-out officer were involved for 3.5-hours plus return travel and vehicle cleaning time.
