Rescue – near Great Ayton

SATURDAY 22nd OCTOBER 2022 (1338 HOURS)

We were contacted by North Yorkshire Police regarding a walker who had fallen and sustained a lower leg injury on a track between Captain Cook’s Monument and Great Ayton. A Team Land Rover containing three members was sent from our Base whilst other members separately made their way to the RV-point at Gribdale Gate carpark. Meanwhile our call-out officer was able to contact a member of the walking party and also spoke to the casualty to check on his condition and to clarify his location via the mountain rescue Phone Find system (which confirmed an earlier What3Words location). We also contacted the Yorkshire Ambulance Service who dispatched an ambulance.

Once the first Team members reached the casualty his injury was assessed and his ankle was immobilised before he was carefully secured within a vacuum mattress and placed onto a mountain rescue stretcher. Team members then carried him approximately 750-metres to the waiting ambulance for onward treatment at hospital. The call-out lasted just under 3-hours including return travel time and involved 13 Team members at the scene plus our call-out officer working from home.
