26th December 2021 – Coastguard Assist followed by Missing Person Search
On Boxing Day morning we were assisting RNLI Redcar and Redcar Coastguard Rescue Team with the Rotary Club of Redcar annual Boxing Day dip. Our role was to dish out a nice warming cup of soup to the hardy dippers after being in the North Sea and to help deal with any medical issues that arose from being in the cold water. Luckily, only one participant needed our assistance. We assisted with casualty care before carrying the lady to the lifeboat station, using a lifeboat stretcher, where she could be properly assessed by the coastguard medics. An ambulance from North East Ambulance Service was called, just to be on the safe side. We wish the lady a full and speedy recovery. Thanks to the RNLI, Coastguard and NEAS teams for a successful multi agency rescue.
Just as some Team members were landing back home, we were contacted by North Yorkshire Police just after 2pm to assist with a search for a vulnerable male in the Commondale area. A 65-year-old male had not returned after setting off from home in the morning. Two doubled-crewed Land Rovers and our control vehicle were immediately deployed.
In total, sixteen Team members made their way to the scene to help North Yorkshire Police search the area. Thankfully, the Team located the missing male, safe and well, just before 5.30pm. The total call-out lasted approximately six-hours. This included travel, vehicle and equipment cleaning/decontamination time.
Thank you to everyone involved. For some members this meant approximately 11 volunteer hours today. This brings our Call-Out numbers to 59 this year and an additional 37 incidents requiring Team resources.
Applications can be made to join the team in a support role (Operational Support) or as a hill going (Search and Rescue) member.
Applications for either role can be made at any time. Intakes for Operational Support members occur at various times of the year. There is one annual intake for Search and Rescue normally each September.Join Now
