Air Ambulance assistance – Roseberry Topping

SATURDAY 11TH NOVEMBER 2023 (1609 HOURS)

We were contacted by the North East Ambulance Service regarding a woman who had sustained a lower leg injury whilst descending from Roseberry Topping. One of our Land Rovers was en route back to our Base from Technical Rescue training on Whitestone Cliff with three members on board so they diverted to Aireyhome Farm (one of our RV-points for Roseberry Topping). Other personnel also made their way there, with two of them being coĺlected as the Rover passed through the farm.

As that first rescue party was dispatched on foot with rescue equipment to the casualty site, a second call-out came in. So when our second Land Rover arrived we split the personnel to service both incidents and sent the second vehicle to the other call-out at Errington Woods (see call-out 44/2023).

A GNAAS helicopter landed impressively close to the path down from Roseberry Topping on a small flat area, thereby minimising the evacuation distance down the muddy path. Their crew dealt with the casualty and our members carried her to the helicopter. As soon as that had taken off we established that there were enough resources at the other call-out, so after a debrief the personnel from Roseberry returned to Base to clean the Land Rover and return it to call-out readiness.

Thanks as always to everyone at Aireyholme Farm for access and parking.

Eleven members were involved in this call-out which lasted just over two-hours.

The GNAAS helicopter ‘parked’ at Roseberry Topping.
