MONDAY 9TH DECEMBER 2024 (0106 HOURS)
Shortly after 0100 hours we were contacted by the Yorkshire Ambulance Service requesting our assistance to recover a casualty from a car that had gone off the road near Delves Bridge, south-west of Egton Bridge. Due to the recent heavy rain and the consequent conditions underfoot, we were needed to safely carry the casualty to the roadside ambulance. North Yorkshire Police were also in attendance.
After making the early morning (or was it late-night) call to our members, some were deployed via our Base to take both Team Land Rovers whilst others made their way directly to the RV-point in personal vehicles. Owing to the road conditions, once there we had to shuttle some of our people across a ford using the Land Rovers. We were then able to carry the casualty for approximately 75-metres to the roadside for transfer to the waiting ambulance.
Fourteen Cleveland MRT members were involved for approximately 2-hours before starting their journey home (up to another hour for some with longer journeys and for those returning vehicles to the Base).
Applications can be made to join the team in a support role (Operational Support) or as a hill going (Search and Rescue) member.
Applications for either role can be made at any time. Intakes for Operational Support members occur at various times of the year. There is one annual intake for Search and Rescue normally each September.

Ahead of our Santa Sleigh run around Great Ayton next Monday, Santa went AWOL last night, going for an unplanned practice run with just one of his helpers. We then received reports of a ‘sleigh crash’ on the moors just outside Great Ayton. Fortunately, we just happened to be up that way for our final training night of the year - what a coincidence!
We’re pleased to report that Santa and his helper (who obviously wasn’t much help on the night!) were soon located. Other than a few bruises here and there they were largely okay. But we took no chances and carried them to the safety of our rescue Land Rovers before they disappeared into the night. They’ll be back on Monday for the sleigh run but this time safely escorted by a crack team of Cleveland’s mountain rescue Elves!
Training last night was organised by a group of our members who are coming towards the end of their Probationary year. We were also helped by our four Prospective members as they aim to become Probationers in 2025. Good luck to both groups for ‘decision time’ when the Committee meets in January.
