A few weeks ago we were contacted by Anna, a coach from Soccability asking if we could help 16-year-old Charlie achieve one of his ambitions – reaching the top of Roseberry Topping, before he undergoes major surgery in the New Year. Charlie who lives in Skelton has Cerebral Palsy which affects his walking, but he loves to play in goal at Soccability, by getting out of his chair and playing on his knees.
Earlier today we put together a mini-training session for Team members to help Charlie reach his ‘goal’! He was accompanied by his mum Kirsty and one of his sisters plus two others from Soccability. Charlie was driven in style (using our Mercedes-Benz GLC support vehicle) along the track from nearby Aireyholme Farm to an old quarry point where the rest of us greeted him.
After getting him comfortable on a Bell rescue stretcher (wrapped in a warm casualty bag), we started the ‘carry-up’ to the summit of Roseberry Topping. As an extra treat and to make him even more comfortable we used one of our stretcher wheels to get him part way up. Then it was off with the wheel for the ‘hard yards’ up the steps to the top, where Charlie got to take in the magnificent views across North Yorkshire and Teesside.
Finally, it was back onto the stretcher followed by the ‘carry & wheel’ down to the cars. Thanks to Charlie’s family and supporters for bringing him along to meet us – he seemed to have a great time. Wishing you all the very best Charlie and thanks for being such a good sport today – well done!
Many thanks to everyone at Aireyholme Farm for their usual superb assistance with parking and land access. Also to Mercedes-Benz of Teesside for continuing to provide a long-term loan vehicle.
Charlie’s sister Katie has very kindly started a Go Fund Me page to raise funds for the Team so please check it out and perhaps consider supporting us that way. Thank you!

Applications can be made to join the team in a support role (Operational Support) or as a hill going (Search and Rescue) member.
Applications for either role can be made at any time. Intakes for Operational Support members occur at various times of the year. There is one annual intake for Search and Rescue normally each September.
