Rescue – Scugdale, near Swainby

WEDNESDAY 2ND OCTOBER 2024 (1641 HOURS)

We managed to squeeze in a relatively quick call-out yesterday before our regular Wednesday night training session:

At the request of the Yorkshire Ambulance Service, we deployed to assist a man who had slipped and injured an ankle whilst walking down one of the tracks below Barkers Crag in Scugdale, east of Swainby. We were in phone contact with a member of his walking party who was able to confirm the casualty’s condition and the location. Thankfully he wasn’t far from the roadside.

He was ‘packaged’ within a casualty bag and carried on a rescue stretcher a short distance to a waiting ambulance for onward treatment in hospital. We wish him well for a swift recovery. Twenty-six Cleveland MRT members were deployed. Approximately half were at the casualty site, with the others at (or on their way) to a standby RV-point a few miles away, when stood down after just under 1.5-hours.

Then it was time for a quick bite to eat before heading out again for training. Last night we were at the Base for our second week of Autumn training sessions, this time refreshing our water / flooding ’awareness’ skills. So following a classroom input we split into three groups looking at ‘throw-line’ techniques, deployment of ‘water kit’ and set-up & preparation of our water / flood rescue trailer. Another annual re-qualification out of the way!
