Rescue – Hutton Moor, Guisborough

SATURDAY 27TH JANUARY 2024 (1051 HOURS)

With most of our available Team members deployed on a full-day search & rescue exercise in the Osmotherley area, training was interrupted for some of them when we received a report, from the North East Ambulance Service, of an injured mountain biker in woodlands south of Hutton Village, Guisborough.

Two Team Land Rovers containing eight members were sent from the exercise and joined two other members, who had made their own way to the woods, meeting up the crew of a NEAS ambulance. The casualty had sustained a serious ankle injury and was treated by the NEAS crew and one of our Team doctors. Once his ankle had been stabilised within a vacuum splint and he had received sufficient pain relief he was lifted onto a wheeled rescue stretcher and ‘wheeled / carried’ along the mountain bike track. Although a distance of only about 200-metres the evacuation route was particularly difficult due to mud, deep ruts and narrow sections.

Still on a stretcher, the casualty was then secured inside one of our Land Rovers and driven down to a forest track where he was transferred to the waiting ambulance. We wish him well for his recovery.

Ten Team members were involved for approximately 2.5-hours before returning to the exercise, rejoining their colleagues for the rest of the afternoon’s training scenario.
