Rescue – Roseberry Topping

THURSDAY 31ST AUGUST 2023 (1307 HOURS)

We were alerted to a request from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service to go to the aid of a male walker who had been taken unwell not far from the summit of Roseberry Topping. Four members went to our Base to collect a Land Rover, whilst others were directed to the area from various locations using their own vehicles.

A What3Words location from the casualty’s walking party (forwarded to us by YAS) was verified as correct via the mountain rescue Phone Find system, so an RV-point was established at Aireyholme Farm, to the south of Roseberry Topping. Using a combination of our Land Rover and a Team member’s personal vehicle, our personnel and the YAS crew were shuttled in from there to Roseberry Col and then walked to the casualty’s location, taking with them a range of medical and rescue equipment.

Once the casualty had been assessed by a Team member, he was secured on a mountain rescue stretcher and carefully carried downhill on some awkward terrain for approximately 120-metres until reaching one of the paths that loops around Roseberry Topping. Then a wheel was fitted to the stretcher to allow him to be ‘wheeled’ approximately 750-metres to the Land Rover. He was well enough to be seated in the vehicle, accompanied by a Team Doctor and YAS personnel monitoring his condition whilst he was driven to the farm RV-point. From there he was transferred to the ambulance for further assessment and treatment as necessary at hospital.  

Two Team members used their own vehicles to transport the casualty’s family, firstly down to the farm and then onto their car at the Roseberry carpark so that they could get to hospital. All Team members wish the man well for his recovery and also would like to thank everyone at Aireyholme Farm for their help with access across their land. 

Fourteen Cleveland MRT members were involved in the call-out which lasted for approximately 2.5-hours.
