SATURDAY 21ST JANUARY 2023 (1131 hours)
We received a request from the North East Ambulance Service to assist with the extraction of a hiker, to the east of Guisborough. He was a member of a walking party from the Newcastle area and had fallen on a very icy stretch of the Cleveland Way, sustaining a painful knee injury. We deployed a Team Land Rover from our Base and other members made their way in their own vehicles to an RV point just off the A171 Road. From there it was a case of walking and driving to the incident site, just over 1-Km away from the main road.
A NEAS first responder paramedic administered some strong pain relief to the casualty. We strapped and splinted his left leg before lifting him onto a rescue stretcher (he was wrapped inside a casualty bag containing heat pads to get warmed up) and then carried him about 100-metres to our vehicle. By that time an ambulance had arrived and he was transferred to that for onward treatment in hospital. We wish him well for his recovery.
Many thanks to the walking party who had originally provided an excellent description of their location. Fourteen Cleveland MRT members were involved for just over 2.25-hours.
Applications can be made to join the team in a support role (Operational Support) or as a hill going (Search and Rescue) member.
Applications for either role can be made at any time. Intakes for Operational Support members occur at various times of the year. There is one annual intake for Search and Rescue normally each September.
