Search: Thornton-Le-Street, Thirsk

FRIDAY 4TH MARCH 2022

We were contacted during Friday evening by North Yorkshire Police with a request to assist them in a search for a 75-year-old man who was missing from his home in Thornton-Le-Street, near Thirsk.

The Team’s call-out procedures were put into action and we deployed three double-crewed vehicles – consisting of two Land Rovers plus our Incident Control Vehicle to an RV-point within the village. A number of other Team members were called out from home and made their own way there. As Cod Beck flows near to the village our water & flood rescue members took their ‘water kit’ in case needed.

Having liaised with police officers, our initial efforts involved splitting into a number of search parties covering land around the village whilst our water & flood rescue team searched sections of the riverbank along Cod Beck. North Yorkshire Police officers were also engaged in the search as was a helicopter from the National Police Air Service HQ.

The search continued into the early hours of Saturday morning at which time the gentleman was still missing. Twenty-three people were initially deployed overnight, initially co-ordinated remotely by our call-out officer until the Team’s incident control point was established in the village. The search lasted approximately 6-hours plus return travel time back to Base and homes.
