Yesterday marked a major milestone in the team’s ability to search for missing people. After a lot of hard work our drone team has received operational authorization from the Civil Aviation Authority to conduct operational drone flights.
Being able to search from the air gives us an entirely different perspective when searching for people and allows us to clear large open areas more quickly and with fewer personnel than traditional search methods.
For operational flying the team is using a state-of-the-art modern drone equipped with searchlight, thermal imaging and high-powered zoom camera. We are able to feed these images into computer analytics software for enhanced detection of missing persons.
We would like to thank North Yorkshire Police for the generous donation of drones at the start of the project and their ongoing support, Cleveland Police for their support, DroneDesk for donating with software and G4H for clothing donations.
Finally, we would like to thank our colleagues in other mountain rescue teams, particularly the MREW drone officer and all of our supporters and donors. Without donations from the public we couldn’t have generated this capability, they are genuinely appreciated and do make a difference. Thank you!
Applications can be made to join the team in a support role (Operational Support) or as a hill going (Search and Rescue) member.
Applications for either role can be made at any time. Intakes for Operational Support members occur at various times of the year. There is one annual intake for Search and Rescue normally each September.
