Whalebones 2021

The Whalebones walk is back for 2021. The Virtual Whalebones respects the spirit of the event but gives you the opportunity to take part in whatever way you want.

Description

The traditional event is from Whitby along the Cleveland Way to Saltburn and then on to Marske by the Sea. This is a distance of 22 miles.

‘Complete the whole event or do parts of the route.  Do it back to front ending at the Whalebones for fish and chips.  Or do it somewhere totally different. You decide!

Just remember to track your route and uploaded it to the Cleveland Mountain Rescue website to register your completion.

We have additional prizes available this year for the most creative selfies or costumes that are Whalebones related.

Join the team

Applications can be made to join the team in a support role (Operational Support) or as a hill going (Search and Rescue) member.

Applications for either role can be made at any time. Intakes for Operational Support members occur at various times of the year. There is one annual intake for Search and Rescue normally each September.

CALL-OUT 46/2023 THURSDAY 30TH NOVEMBER 2023 (2115 HOURS) We were contacted last night by North Yorkshire Police to go to the aid of four occupants of a car that had crashed in wintery conditions, approximately 9-miles east of Stokesley, midway between Kildale and Commondale. The Police anticipated some problems in reaching the scene due to the weather and road conditions, hence the request to us. We deployed two double-crewed Team Land Rovers from our Base and other Team members were put on standby in case needed. Owing to poor mobile phone coverage in that area neither the Police nor our Call-out Officer were able to re-contact the car occupants - it is believed that one of them had originally raised the alarm by walking to higher ground. Eventually our Land Rover crews reached the accident and located the occupants who, although cold, fortunately did not need medical treatment at the scene. As they were stranded, we then transported them home, approximately 6-miles to the Lingdale area on the far side of the A171 Guisborough to Whitby road. The Police were updated and advised about recovery requirements for the damaged vehicle and about damage to a wall. Five Team members were involved (with nine others on standby) for just over 2.25-hours by the time they returned to Base. (Library photo - an old one!)
EVENT CANCELLED - ESKDALE EUREKA We are advised that the Eskdale Eureka run that was scheduled to take place this coming Sunday (3rd December) has been cancelled owing to safety concerns. This is due to the already icy conditions on roads in the area which will be likely to impact on travelling and also to related logistical problems at the start / finish. We understand that the organisers hope to reschedule the event early next year. Runners - please share with your family & friends etc who may have entered or intended going to the event.
Many congratulations to the five Cleveland MRT members who passed the Mountain Rescue England and Wales Casualty Care exam earlier today. Some took the exam for the first time, whilst others were re-qualifying (which is required every 3-years). The exam consists of a written test followed by practical scenarios covering trauma and medical conditions. This is the culmination of weeks of training input from the Team’s medical officer assisted by our Team doctors and others (including from the ambulance services) plus a range of ‘training bodies’. Thank you and well done to everybody involved! Many thanks to Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team for hosting the exams for us and other Teams in the north-east.

Cleveland Mountaineering Club members held their annual dinner on 11th November at the Cleveland Tontine. The club held a raffle on the night and raised a total of £240, which has been split between Cleveland MRT and Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team. A club spokesperson said: 'As a mountaineering club, we’re not only very aware of the incredible work the MRTs carry out, but also sincerely thankful and we know the proceeds are going to an excellent cause'. We would like to record our thanks to all club members and everyone who donated via the raffle and also many thanks for the kind words in recognition of the role that volunteer mountain rescue teams perform.
